Abstract

Calcification of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) is a condition characterized by the deposition of hydroxylapatite. If associated with pain and restricted motion this condition is defined asPellegrini-Stieda Syndrome. It is supposed to be associated either with significant trauma or repeated strain (e.g. regular physical exercise). We present the case of a physically active 61-year-old female, who reported severe knee pain and acute limitation of motion after physical exercise. The X-ray showed a radiopaque mass on the medial aspect of the knee. A preceding episode had been treated conservatively, disregarding a small radiopaque mass in the MCL. Due to the recurrence and high level of activity the open resection and complete removal of the lesion was chosen. On 6-month follow-up the patient had already returned to her former level of physical activity without pain or restrictions.
